Alan, what you say is so true. All leadrs have to be managers some of the time but unfortunately not all managers are able to step up to the plate to be leaders. It is a real challenge especially when appointing people to a position just below CEO that he or she has some leadership potential not only management skills.

What a great posting as I truly love the quote from Theodore Roosevelt. I believe it is pretty common to understand that managing and leading are definitely two different skill sets and a company is lucky to find skilled people with both. But to understand the value in a person's ability to lead in the way that is described in that short quote, is priceless.

It is a balance and definitely an art to become a great leader. Great post!

Since a lot of unsocial, analytical, insecure outsider-types ("radio geeks")are attracted to the radio industry, peer appreciation & encouragement are powerful forces. Heck, I used to be one of them! (If you understand the term "Walter Mitty complex", you're way too old). But I digress. Experience has taught me that the best approach is zero-based when either taking over an established station or launching a new one. What's the footprint? Who lives there? Who do advertisers want to reach? Dominant psychographics? What do they want that they're not getting? Etc. It's good to be aware of what the competition and the industry are doing but it's better to not get too absorbed by it. Focus on the end-user.

Well, almost there on the name :)

The conversation part is actually not automatic. That's the part that gets most businesses. Offering content at the right time can be automated. The feedback loop is often also manual and requires human input.

Thank you for the link and for the resources.

The battle to be the authority and sole provider of music is over, and we've lost. I completely agree unique talent and compelling content is the only way to thrive.

10 years ago when MTV transitioned from music videos to reality TV, maybe we should have taken notice. They were serving the needs of a generation that longed for reality, story and relationship over slickly produced music marketing.

It's an exciting opportunity that we can be more than just someone's juke box. We can make them laugh, make them cry, make them think, make them react, make them feel included in a community. And we have more tools and channels to do that then ever.
